Track 1 - Warmduscher "I Got Friends"
DD: Let’s start with some raucous Warmduscher - “Woo Hoo, That’s Right!”
Track 2 - Justice Vs Simian "We Are Your Friends"
SS: I’ve added “We Are Your Friends” by Justice vs Simian. It seems like a happy reply to the the song before.
Track 3 - Disco Tex & The Sex-O-Lettes "I Wanna Dance Wit' Choo"
DD: Nice. Classic tune. Ok I'm going to make the leap from Justice via their biggest hit D.A.N.C.E. which I've always thought had a similar "do the dance/do that dance" vocal hook to this beauty - Disco Tex & His Sex-O-Lettes "I Wanna Dance Wit’ Choo".
Track 4 - The Go! Team "Huddle Formation"
SS: And I am going to make the leap to The Go Team - “Huddle Formation”. The crowd starting Disco Tex & His Sex-O-Lettes "I Wanna Dance Wit’ Choo” made me think of this one. Crowds and atmospheres often make a really good vibe for a song.
Track 5 - El Perro del Mar "God Knows (You Gotta Give To Get)"
DD: Switching up the mood with some dreamy pop from El Perro del Mar which was another mid-00s release on the same, consistently great record label, Memphis Industries.
Track 6 - Dennis Wilson "River Song"
SS: I’ve added Dennis Wilson’s “River Song”. God Knows led me to God Only Knows by The Beach Boys. Dennis Wilson was the drummer in the band and this is along off his solo album. It’s also an amazing arrangement and great song.
Track 7 - Melanie & The Edwin Hawkins Singers "Lay Down (Candles In The Rain)"
DD: The vocals on “River Song” are incredible and huge, so I've added the similarly epic "Lay Down (Candles In The Rain)" by Melanie & The Edwin Hawkins Singers.
Track 8 - Tony Allen "Secret Agent"
SS: ”Lay Down" made me think how important rhythm is in modern music and so I got to thinking about amazing influential drummers. Here’s a track from the late Tony Allen - on his recently remastered album called "Secret Agent”.
Track 9 - Beats International "Dub Be Good To Me"
DD: Tony Allen was part of the supergroup The Good, The Bad & The Queen, as was Paul Simonon of The Clash, so I've added the Beats International 90s classic "Dub Be Good To Me", which samples Paul Simonon's bassline from The Clash's "Guns Of Brixton".
Track 10 - Melt Yourself Down "Boot And Spleen"
SS: Listening to the end of "Dub Be Good To Me" made me think how brass has made such a big comeback and how versatile it is. "Boot and Spleen" by Melt Yourself Down is a great example of blended afrobeat, punk, jazz and funk with amazingly dirty sounding sax. Finishing the playlist with some high energy. Enjoy!
